More disruption in the next 5 years than there has been in the last 50 years? Probably!

This decade started with covid19, the lockdowns, economic shock and then alarming inflation. War started in Europe, war started in the Middle East, fears of war in the Far East. Drone warfare has become normal. Energy transition is gathering momentum, after 200 years of industry fuelled by coal, Britain is closing its last blast furnaces and its remaining coal fired power stations. EVs are becoming more common and the manufacturing of ICE powered automobiles is soon to be discontinued. Demographic transition is inverting population pyramids in many developed nations and mass immigrations disturb the status quo. Digital currencies are being phased in. Direct satellite connectivity everywhere for all and IOT. The rise of AI and autonomous robotic devices, whether it be automobiles, drone deliveries, long haul trucks, or work done in farms and factories or even in the forest. These changes will totally upend work culture and the value of experience and qualifications.

The future mostly is uncertain, but two things are certain, the need for energy and for carbon in industrial processes.

Creating the tools to sustainably convert forest biomass into energy and carbon dense, logistically optimised solid fuel/feedstock will future proof New Zealand forestry.

Now is not a moment too soon to develop this technology, once the knowhow is developed, New Zealand will become a world leader in the utilisation of woody biomass and in the production of the tools needed.
